Flax

“…flax seeds, well they tear me open
and supposedly you can crawl right through me
taste these teeth please
and undress me from these sweaters better hurry
cause I'm keeping upward bound now
oh maybe I'll build my house in your cloud
here I'm tumbling for you
stumbling through the work that I have to do
don't mean to harm you…”   -Jason Mraz

Ground, nutty tasting flaxseeds should be a part of our daily diet; sprinkled on a salad, a generous scoop in a protein shake or how about a teaspoon of flaxseed oil in a fresh squeezed lemon-garlic salad dressing! Flaxseeds and flax seed oil are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which may help to lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure by inhibiting inflammatory reactions that cause poor circulation and artery-hardening plaque.

Omega -3s can also be essential when it comes to alleviating arthritis joint pain. Ground flaxseeds are loaded with fiber that aid to relieve symptoms of constipation and  hemorrhoids. Flaxseed oil may also reduce risks of cancer. Adding 3 heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily to a diet, health study subjects proved to have more slowly-dividing tumor cells.

You may purchase the flaxseeds whole and grind them in a coffee grinder or get them already ground (Barlean's makes a great product); or buy the oil or capsules but you will miss out on the fiber and the awesome texture and taste!
