Demand organic popcorn at the movies!

Do you know that your perfectly seasoned, warm and buttery popcorn contains its own built-in pesticide, genetically inserted by a bacteria into its DNA? “They” tell us not to worry cause Bt-toxin (the pesticide) is destroyed in our stomach.

The Institute for Responsible Technology disagrees with this claim listing many studies and reports that show how the corn was toxic to rats and had immune response abnormalities in other animals.

Bt pesticide is part of the DNA and therefore a genetic component of the pollen. In 2003 for example (many sited HERE), while corn was pollinating, about 100 people in the Philippines “experienced headaches, dizziness, extreme stomach pain, vomiting, chest pains, fever and allergies, as well as respiratory, intestinal, and skin reactions.” Same symptoms appeared when the same Bt corn was planted in four other villages.

Recently in the news, the additive diacetyl, used to flavor popcorn, was found to cause serious damage of the lungs when inhaled for a period of time.

The choice is yours. We want our popcorn to be as good for us as it tastes; without pesticides, genetically engineered components, trans fats, gluten, fake flavors and lung crippling junk. Luckily there are many alternatives to conventional popcorn:

1. You can buy it organic:

- Shiloh Farms Organic Lite Popcorn

- Eden Organic Popcorn

- Bearitos Organic Popcorn

- Newman's Own Organics Pop's Corn

2. You can buy your own hot air popcorn popper for about $15 and in 5 min. you will have gallons of popcorn that you can flavor with olive oil or melted Earth Balance spread!

3. Or do it the old-fashioned way, here is a recipe:
  • In a stainless steel pot put 2-3 Tbs of sunflower oil and heat on medium flame (2-3 min)
  • To check if pot is hot enough drop in 2-5 kernels, cover the pot and if they quickly pop, right away pour in 1/2 cup of organic corn kernels, and cover the pot.
  • Lower the heat to low and let the corn pop, once in the while swirl the covered pot over the flame to let the unpopped kernels fall to the bottom of the pot.
  • Popcorn is done when you hear very little popping. Take off heat and enjoy!
  • You can then drizzle it with organic extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt, cayenne or any other seasonings you love.
